8:30 – 10:00 Jon Bihl – Stay Strong. (.15)

In order to stay on top of our game in our workplace, we need keen skills and a healthy body. Mr. Bihl is a physical therapist specializing in athletics, ergonomics, injury rehabilitation, health and wellness. He is employed by Progressive Rehabilitation Associates at Mercy Medical Plaza in Iowa City, Iowa.

With the physical demands of steno reporters in mind, Mr. Bihl will discuss the importance of correct ergonomics and what to keep in mind when setting up for your day. He will describe potential work-related injuries and give participants tools to prevent repetitive strain injuries.

10:15 – 11:45 Hon. Fae Hoover-Grinde – Addiction and Drug/Treatment Courts. (Pending: A representative from the University of Iowa) .15

Judge Fae Hoover-Grinde is a district court judge in the Sixth Judicial District of Iowa. Her docket includes drug/treatment court in two counties that include Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

Judge Hoover-Grinde will tell us the makeup of specialty courts, what they are designed to do, and how they are working. She (and/or a representative from the University of Iowa) will also go through the chemistry of drugs in the human brain and how that leads to addiction.

11:45 – 12:00 Break

12:00 – 1:00 William Wimmer – Legislative/Political Update. (.1)

Bill Wimmer has been ICRA’s lobbyist for 36 years. While we enjoy lunch, Mr. Wimmer will discuss ICRA’s legislative position and update ICRA members on topics of interest to all steno reporters…freelancers, officials, and CART captioners. This being an election year, Mr. Wimmer will also discuss the recent Iowa caucuses and the upcoming elections at both the state and national levels.

1:00 – 2:30 Richard Murphy (or a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s Office or law enforcement) – Keep Yourself Safe – See Something, Say Something. (.15)

Mr. Murphy is an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa and serves on that district’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force. He (or a representative from his office or law enforcement) will talk about what we should do as citizens of the U.S. to keep ourselves safe from terrorism at home and while traveling. He also will address what behaviors to watch for and what we should do if we see something that raises our suspicions.

2:30 – 2:45 Break

2:45 – 4:15 Allison Wise – The Importance of Backing Up. Protecting Your Product. (.15)

Allison Wise is an official reporter in the Fourth Judicial District of Iowa. She is President of the Iowa Court Reporters Association, serves on the Judicial Technology Committee, and has streamlined ICRA’s communication and delivery processes. Allison is a tech-savvy reporter who is always looking for new tools of our trade.

Don’t stick your head in the sand when it comes to backing up your valuable work product! The loss of steno or transcript at any stage of the process is a waste of your valuable time. Allison will walk us through the latest methods of backing up, storing, and keeping our work safe.
