Student court reporters have the advantage today to choose which arena of court reporting they would like to work.  They can opt to be an Official reporter, a Freelance reporter, a CART provider, or a Broadcast Captioner.  Each one is unique in its own way.  The Official reporter has more structure with set hours, if that is preferred; and the Freelancers and Captioners may choose to work varying hours, perhaps even in the middle of the night.  CART providers have more structured hours, but they are usually not a set 9-5 schedule.  While still in school each student may decide which route most fits him or her.

The Iowa Court Reporters Association offers many resources for reporting students!
