Another way court reporters utilize their skills is to provide communication access realtime translation (CART) to deaf or hard-of-hearing litigants, jurors and witnesses.  Providing this access in the court system is an important role played by these reporters.   The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 mandates equal access to our judicial system.  The CART provider, assuming an interpretive role, captures the content and also the spirit of the proceedings using instant speak-to-text technology.  This service allows the consumer the opportunity to read instantly everything being said.

CART providers are also proven very helpful in the classroom setting enabling deaf or hard-of-hearing students to have access to lectures and vital discussions in the educational setting.  Turning speech into text in the classroom enables students to participate in their own learning in a meaningful way.

Many people who experience a hearing loss do so later in life thus they are not competent in sign language.  The realtime translations produced by the CART provider allow equal access by everyone to public meetings, religious services and medical appointments.
